About Biophage

Biophage, Inc. is a Texas biotechnology company developing precision bacteriophage therapeutics for antimicrobial-resistant infections in horses and livestock. We are building a platform where phage biology meets veterinary clinical science — designed specifically for the pathogens that cause the greatest harm in equine and agricultural medicine.

Our lead program targets Streptococcus equi, the pathogen responsible for strangles — the most prevalent and economically damaging infectious disease in horses worldwide. Antibiotic resistance is accelerating. Regulatory pathways for phage-based products are actively evolving at both the EPA and FDA. The clinical need and the regulatory window are aligned.

Biophage was founded to fill a gap that has existed for decades: a focused, field-deployable phage development program built by clinicians who have managed these infections firsthand — not from a laboratory bench, but from the stall floor of a working hospital.

Leadership Team

Benjamin Rice Buchanan, DVM, DACVIM, DACVECC

Founder & Chief Executive Officer

Dr. Buchanan founded Biophage after two decades managing infectious disease in horses at the clinical frontline — including repeated strangles outbreaks across a five-location equine hospital network he built in Texas. He has seen what current antimicrobial tools can and cannot do, and he built Biophage around what comes next.

Board-certified in both Large Animal Internal Medicine (DACVIM) and Emergency & Critical Care (DACVECC) — a combination held by fewer than a dozen veterinarians in the world — Dr. Buchanan brings clinical depth, institutional credibility, and an existing clinical network to Biophage’s development and commercialization strategy. He is a co-author of the 2018 ACVIM Consensus Statement on Strangles (Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine) and serves as Adjunct Professor at Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine.

He leads Biophage’s scientific direction, regulatory strategy, investor relationships, and clinical partnerships.
